The New Yard

Even more from Reading-Jersey Central Magazine 1938

bronx terminal new yard

The only image of “The New Yard” I have ever seen. The New Yard was an additional 95 car capacity yard added to the Bronx Terminal in 1929, on the opposite side of 3rd Ave. Who says 12″ radii aren’t prototypical! The curve at the back of the yard was 90′ radius, or about 12″ in HO scale.

Looking at this area on Google maps, this radius can still be seen.

Large version of image here.

  1. Great shot Tim. I wouldn’y have thought that real 40 ft cars could go around that radius. I also see that one of the cars is being loaded with something as it has a curved chute going in its top.

  2. Tim,
There is a shot of the Harlem Transfer that shows this yard across the canal. You can see the back of this sign on the fence along with the cement silos. I think it is a fairly late shot taken when CNJ diesel #1001 was working the area. I forget where the photo is from, let me know if you don’t have it.
