Repowering a Brass Boxcab

brass boxcab cnj 1000

Earlier in the year I managed to find an old Astro Craft brass boxcab model of CNJ 1000, the engine used at the Bronx Terminal for several decades.

Since it was a fairly old model, mid-60’s I would guess, the power drive on it was pretty much useless.  I have been hunting for a suitable drive for it for some time.  Knowing that North West Shortline produced the ideal unit was encouraging, but the fact that they discontinued to model was not.  Fortunately when we were in California in July I found one at Whistle Stop Hobbies.

It rained all day Sunday, so I could not mow the lawn.  Very disappointed, I decided to return to the Bronx Terminal project and start on rebuilding the engine .

The gallery above (click on the picture to open it) shows the progress so far.

  1. Tim,
I have admired your work since I first had the great fortune to meet you at your house during a DoubleHeader’s show a number of years ago. I am one of the guys who would truck through your house from Buffalo.
Two years ago when you started your blog I thought this is so great, one day I will have one. Well that time is now. You can view it at http://www.andymacvie.com I have a link to your blog. Thank you for the inspiration. They say the imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I hope you like it and thanks for inspiring and entertain me all these years.

  2. Hi,

I have a friend who is trying to convert an N-Scale Bachmann 44 Tonner into a boxcab diesel. The only blueprints I have ever seen (where I could actually read the dimensions) are on the first picture at the beginning of your photo gallery. Is there any chance that I could get a copy or a high quality scan of that magazine page? Please?

I am trying to model some form of terminal railroad such Manhattan Transfer or Harlem Transfer, etc. Not being as skilled as you are, I will be taking some liberties with the actual track plan. I hope to use the small Peco switches with some butchering to create a simplified track plan. I will skip things like the triple overlapped switch with the drop-in crossing to the engine house.

Any help would be truly appreciated.

  4. Tim,
I’m working on modeling a CNJ #1000 from a MDC Boxcab, and will repower it with a custom frame. However, my issue is the color of the unit, and decals…..What is the color of the unit, and is there decals made for it?

I plan to use Bachmann Spectrum 44 Ton Center Cab, motor trucks from the first release, that I have, brand new made to fit the factory MDC frame, once its milled to except the new trucks! Any help and guidance, is greatly appreciated! ~John
