Riveting

Former Railroad Bridge

060607s.jpg

I love riveted structure. Something about the patterns that is akin to art. Modern structures have no flavour, simply a bland means to an end whereas structures built a hundred years ago reflect the designers skill and artistic abilities, whether they meant to or not.

This former railroad bridge is in Brantford, Ontario. This is where I shot yesterdays picture from.

  1. Well then Tim, you had to be standing on the CN trestle to get that photo of the Lorne Bridge. Were you trespassing? I wish I had a dollar for the hours spent along the river bank in West Brant while I was a kid then I could afford to buy the Lorne Bridge today!

    Thanks for the memories…

  2. Hi Tim, I really enjoy your photos, very nice. Since you like rivets, you might like this tid bit: the entire Eiffel Tower was predrilled for all of it’s 2,500,000 rivets without any having to be redone.

  3. TIM, beautiful photo

STEPHEN, really? That’s amazing!! And I’m getting hit with $20,000 charges to move a few girts that were mis-aligned.

Dumb question – how do I add photos to a comment?

  4. Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the feedback! Its good to know someone is looking at them. I do enjoy the challenge of photography and having a site to display them at least give me something to use them for. I have a few others I took that day as well the look pretty good, and hope to post them in the next few days.

That is amazing about the Eiffel Tower! I have a book here about the construction of the Welland Canal, which isn’t too far from here and it includes all the engineering drawings for the lift bridges, lock equipment etc. and every hole for every rivet is documented in it so when erecting the final structures no on site drilling would need to be done. Its hard to believe they could get all this right the first time, without a computer. Maybe that is why….

  5. Hi,

Unfortunately due to spam issues it isn’t possible to post photos in the comments box. I do believe you can put links into the comments, which could point to a photo posted elsewhere.
