Double Rolling Lift Bridges over the Flight Locks

030707s.jpg

This is one of the most interesting spots along the Welland Canal, the section called “The Flight Locks”. Three consecutive locks drain into each other raising or lowing ships about 200 feet in total. There are 8 locks along the canal that by-passes Niagara Falls allowing ships to travel between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.

Right at the end of the flight locks is a very busy double track main line, and this crosses the twin locks on two rolling lift bridges, with a small section of track in the centre of the two locks. On a busy day there is lots of ship and train traffic and is very interesting to watch.

Of course in the last few years lots of fences have shown up making this once great transportation watching spot less and less accessible. Except for this spot. Don’t tell anyone.

Do you see the guy on the ship waving?

Night Ship

Lake Ontario

Taken from the St. Catherines side of Lake Ontario the other night while out for a ride on the bike. Can you spot Toronto across the lake?

This is the summer version of this picture taken a few years back.

Welland Canal, Port Colborne, Ontario

Shot last night at the Welland Canal in Port Colborne. If you need a dose of heavy industry and transportation, this is the place.

It was worth the 200 mile bike ride last evening….
