Continuous Rail Turnout

020508.jpg

This image was sent to me last week from a reader. It is a rotating frog turnout from a tram system in Europe (location unknown). The trains using this track use a form of track based braking that requires uninterrupted rail, to make this work at turnouts a section of rail is rotated to align with the route selected. Pretty clever, and would be quite reliable I would think (except in -30C under a foot of snow and ice).

Thanks Richard!

Mmmm, I’ll bet those tomatoes had a nice coal tar flavour to them.

Another find from Shorpy, this Jack Delano photo from 1943 shows Chicago & North Western RR railroad workers cultivating a little Victory garden at the Proviso Yard. I am amazed at the quality of the colour and composition of the photos shot by Jack Delano in the 40’s, they rival anything shot in digital today. No instant feedback and delete key on the old Kodachrome 4×5 camera.

Great big version here.
