Abandoned History

The AirLine, Delhi, Ontario

Yes, there are railroad tracks buried in there. This scene is hard for me to grasp as this was the busy rail line that ran past the house where I grew up. Over these tracks huge 80-100 car trains rumbled past at 70 mph, every couple of hours, 24 hours a day. Now, this is what remains after 10 years of abandonment.

Part of the line is still active, with a train every couple days delivering a car to a fertilizer plant at the east end of town, but beyond that this is what is left of the line.  A hundred feet ahead the rails end in a pile of gravel.

Moving out

210607s.jpg

They sure don’t waste any time moving on. We checked the nest two days ago and all the birds had already left, which is surprising as it was only about two weeks in total that they were in there.

They were all hopping around in the back yard being taught the intricacies of Robinhood by a screeching mom.

We have one nest available now.

Hummer

200607s.jpg

Ever since we put up a humming bird feeder there has been a humming noise on the back porch, apparently the feeder is quite popular among the local humming bird community. Getting a picture of one of these little things is quite a challenge, which I have been trying to do for the last week. I finally managed to snap one yesterday by sitting very still in the hot tub with the camera and waiting. Fortunately sitting still in the hot tub isn’t that hard to do. Not dropping the camera is another challenge.
